Summary

In 2012, the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission (SFPUC) launched their Non-potable Water Program to allow buildings to install onsite water systems for the collection and treatment of alternate water sources, including stormwater, graywater, blackwater, rainwater, and foundation drainage for non-potable reuse.  In San Francisco, individual buildings and/or districts collecting and treating alternate water sources are also eligible for grants from the SFPUC.  In 2015, a new city ordinance was established requiring new buildings in San Francisco of 250,000 square feet or more to be constructed using alternate water sources for toilet flushing and irrigation.
