Speaker(s)

Ruben Willmarth

Ruben Willmarth has been working in the engineering, construction and manufacturing industries for 28 years.  He began his career as an HVAC Design Engineer for a mid-size MEP firm in Ontario, CA after graduating from Cal Poly Pomona.  He later worked for both a commercial HVAC and Power Generation Design-Build contractor for 6 years before joining a manufacturer in 2005.   Ruben’s experience in commercial design & installation includes Schools, Hospitals, multi-story office buildings, and industrial process cooling including mid-size data centers.  It also includes cogeneration, standby power, energy studies, Solar HW systems, and other integrated aspects of systems design & construction.  Ruben is currently a member of ASHRAE Sierra Delta Chapter, and a Heat Pump specialist for Norman S Wright in Northern CA.  He has facilitated the design & installation of hundreds of VRF projects.

Presentation
Summary
This presentation will provide a technical overview of the transition from R410A to A2L refrigerants, primarily R32 & 454b, with a focus on their application in commercial HVAC systems. Key topics include the definition and characteristics of A2L refrigerants, briefly highlighting their differences in flammability and safety profiles compared to traditional refrigerants. The presentation will examine ASHRAE Standard 15-2022/2024, specifically updates for A2L refrigerants and the associated refrigerant mitigation measures, along with the calculation methods for determining required safety measures. Additionally, we will review UL 2-40, its relevance to refrigerant system certification, and its impact on the design and installation of systems using A2L refrigerants. The process for Split Systems & VRF application will be outlined in five clear steps, adhering to both ASHRAE Standard 15 and CMC for new heat pump and VRV systems utilizing A2L refrigerants. Emphasis will be placed on the most common applications of UL 2-40 and CMC requirements, with particular attention given to what triggers a fire-rated shaft, which are some of the most frequently raised concerns in these applications. This session will equip attendees with the foundational technical understanding to ensure safe implementation and code compliance of A2L refrigerants in HVAC systems.
