 Bryan E. Johnson- Principal, Director of Health Care, Capital Engineering Consultants
Mr. Johnson, BS in Economics from SDSU and MBA from UC Davis, has been involved in the leadership of Capital Engineering Consultants since joining the firm and is a Principal and the Director of Health Care. He has over 30 years experience in a broad array of project types but has focused on the Healthcare Market throughout his career. He is LEED-trained on accepted energy and environmental principles that strike a balance between known effective practices and emerging concepts. He is also very involved with implementation and use of BIM / 3D and coordination methods both within CECI and within project Teams. Bryan served on the Lean Construction Institute (LCI), Northern Chapter Board of Advisors for several years and is currently co-chairmen of the LCI, Northern California Branch. Bryan is a champion of utilizing highly collaborative Teams to support delivery methods such as Integrated Project Delivery (IPD) and Design Build. His involvement in the community seeks to forward the continuous improvement and development of these project delivery methods as well has enhanced Project Team performance of all project delivery methods.

Chris Morris- Project Executive, HMH Builders
Mr. Morris is one of the premier builders of healthcare facilities in Northern California, having completed millions of square feet of acute and non-acute care facilities. His success is based on a solid foundation of experienced staff, technical knowledge, and a thorough understanding of regulatory requirements. Recently completed medical projects include acute-care hospital campuses, patient towers, medical office buildings, out-patient surgery centers, imaging centers, and clinics.

Zach Sargent- Healthcare Division Manager, Superior Air Handling
Mr. Sargent has over 20 years of experience in the HVAC/Mechanical industry and has been working with Superior Air Handling since 1990. He has been actively involved in multiple Healthcare projects throughout the West Coast. He served as Preconstruction and Construction Manager for the Portland Providence Pavilion and Southwest Washington Medical Center Projects. He also served as the Senior Project Manager for multiple large Healthcare projects, including Sacred Heart Medical Center in Springfield, OR which is presently the largest Healthcare facility between San Francisco and Seattle. Among other local projects, Zach managed the HVAC Design Assist services team for The Lucille Packard Children’s Hospital at Stanford University and two hospitals for Sutter Health, the Alta Bates Merritt Tower in Oakland and Sutter Medical Center at Castro Valley. Notably the team at Castro Valley was awarded the 2010 Building Information Modeling project of the year by the American Institute of Architects, in recognition of their innovations and implementation of the latest technology to integrate design and construction in the building industry.

Summary:

 Topic Introduction
The US Healthcare Market is in the midst of a construction boom. Changing demographics, increased competition and aging infrastructure are creating the need for large scale growth in the industry. Today’s technologies in design and implementation make the modern healthcare facility an excellent study in optimized, integrated construction and operation. Northern California is the epicenter of this expanding market with local expertise to utilize cutting edge strategies. Our ASHRAE Panel will present the opportunities and challenges associated with today’s healthcare construction.
