Speakers

Michele Sagehorn, CEM, LEED AP

Michele Sagehorn has worked for over 15 years on high performance buildings, including as a leading commissioning agent. From her background as a quality assurance engineer in the automotive industry, she brings to commissioning a standard of care that is unique to the built environment. Her experience spans numerous project types, including leadership on eight ZNE and twelve carbon-neutral buildings.

In 2018, Michele and two of her colleagues launched Red Car Analytics, a company dedicated to engaging clients in building and operating high performance buildings through clear analytics and insights of operations, measured data, and experience in design and construction integration.

Chris Light, PE, LEED AP BD+C

Chris Light is a mechanical engineer with more than 8 years of experience designing and fine-tuning high performance buildings. He founded Celeritas Engineering in 2018 to develop uncomplicated mechanical systems for low carbon buildings, with a focus on improving occupant health, well-being, and productivity. He has worked on more than 15 LEED Platinum and 9 Net Zero Energy projects and leverages this experience to define the value of high-functioning building systems to owners, tenants, and design teams.

Chris’ professional experience includes serving as the Director of Engineering, Associate Principal, and HVAC Controls Team Lead at prominent MEP design firms. He guest lectured at Stanford University for a graduate-level course on energy-efficient building design from 2013-2018 and spoke on achieving market-rate Net Zero Energy performance at the New Building Institute’s Getting to Zero National Forum in 2018.

Presentation
Summary
Michele and Chris will explore the importance of high functioning building systems and discuss approaches to achieving higher levels of building performance before and during occupancy. Strategies will be identified for quantifying the benefits of building performance in the context of occupant well being, carbon emissions, operations and maintenance, and financial returns. Through the lens of case studies, different performance validation metrics will be discussed and correction during occupancy, including thoughts on how major issues could have been avoided during the design and construction phases.
